This incredible 9 Day Rwanda gorillas, chimps & wildlife safari offers the opportunity for once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters. You’ll drive through Akagera National park tracking the famous African BIG 5 game, track chimpanzees and spot monkeys, baboons and other wildlife in Nyungwe National Park. Trekking deep into the forests of Volcanoes National Park, you’ll search for endangered mountain gorillas with expert local gorilla rangers. You’ll also have an opportunity to explore Kigali and its colourful markets, cross Nyungwe’s Canopy Walkway and kayak on Lake Kivu.
Tour Highlights
DAY 1: Arrival to Kigali, Rwanda
This Rwanda Gorillas, Chimps & Wildlife Tour starts here after you arrive at Kigali International Airport. Upon arrival you are met with a safari driver guide and transferred to the Serena Kigali Hotel. This afternoon if you have time you can, you will have a heart breaking experience at the genocide memorial grounds, this is as unique as you will learn about the Rwandan History then you will learn a lot about their rich tribes and more about their culture. At Kigali Genocide Memorial and learn about the tragedy that happened in 1994 and the amazing stories of forgiveness and recovery since that time.

DAY 2: Transfer to Akagera National Park
Morning drive to Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda, a dramatic landscape of rolling hills, savannah and woodland interspersed with a series of lakes. You may see giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, Zebra, crocodile and other wildlife. Dinner and Overnight at Karenge bush camp
DAY 3: Northern game drives and boat cruise on Lake Ihema
Breakfast, early morning game drive starts with a spectacular sunrise. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and landscape through the northern part of the park, where most of the animals prefer to inhabit. Enjoy the views and canoe ride of Lake Ihema. Dinner and Overnight at Ruzizi tented camp
DAY 4: Transfer from Akagera to Nyungwe Forest
After Breakfast on the fourth day this amazing safari, you’ll head to southern Rwanda to visit Nyungwe Forest, the chimpanzee’s home. Journey to Nyungwe Forest is stunning beautiful, through terraced hillsides and along the way we will stop to visit the Nyanza Kings palace and the Rwanda National Museum, before we enjoy lunch in Butare. Continue the drive this afternoon through the dramatic landscape of the Nyungwe Forest, arriving at our lodge located in the middle of the Nyungwe Forest. DAY 5: Nyungwe Forest – Chimpanzee tracking
Breakfast and then have an early start to go Chimpanzee tracking through Nyungwe. The forest is rich in botanical diversity and home to 13 species of primates including Chimpanzees, L’Hoest monkeys, and Columbus monkeys with 300 bird species. You will take a picnic lunch. Return is likely late this afternoon, as the tracking can be quite strenuous and can take all day. Dinner and Overnight at Nyungwe top view lodge
DAY 6: Nyungwe Forest – Colobus Tracking OR Waterfall Trails OR Canopy Walk
Six days in the Rwanda Gorillas & chimpanzees tour today, you have a variety of hikes and excursions to choose from, you can choose to go for an escorted walk in search of the large groups of Colobus monkeys and birds including the Ruwenzori turaco. Perhaps also take a guided walk to the waterfall, and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the forest. Alternatively you can choose to go for a a canopy walk or relax at the lodge, take advantage of the on-site spa services, or catch up on your email with the Wi-Fi service available in all rooms! DAY 7: Nyungwe Forest Lodge to Volcanoes National Park
Early breakfast and get on our journey to northern Rwanda the Virunga Volcanoes, Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The drive will take approximately 6hours. Dinner and Overnight at Le Bambou gorilla lodge / Mountain gorilla view Lodge
DAY 8: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla trekking
First Gorilla trek! You will arise early this morning and drive to the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park where you will meet your trackers/guides and head up the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. You will visit one of the ten habituated groups. Tracking Rwanda gorillas through the lush forested slopes of the Virungas is an absolutely magical experience. Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy, so you should be able to hike for three hours on steep mountain trails. DAY 8: Volcanoes National Park – Dianney Fossey hike
With morning breakfast, we storm the forest again to track the hike to Dian Fossey’s grave or the Gorilla cemetery or Forest walk in Volcanoes National Park. Dinner and Overnight at Le Bambou gorilla lodge / Mountain gorilla view Lodge
DAY 9: Volcanoes to Kigali and flights home
Breakfast and pack, then transfer to Kigali for your flight headed home. If you did not have time to visit on arrival day, you should get time to visit Kigali Genocide Memorial Site before your departure flight.
